One of the great racing games of all times is ExciteTruck. It was one of the Wii's launch titles, so you probably overlooked it. Also, the name seemed kind of lame. Honestly, ExciteTruck? That was the best you could come up with? Anyway, ExciteTruck gets a sequel--sort of--with ExciteBots: Trick Racing. Instead of brightly colored SUVs, ExciteBots lets you drive around brightly colored robots.
If this sounds silly, that's because it is silly. Click to the right to see a trailer for the game and keep reading for my review!
At first you'll only have a few robots to choose from, like the frog (my favorite), the ladybug, and the heavy, slow-moving turtle. But after a few hours of play, you'll be able to unlock more robots, like the super-fast (and kind of creepy) spider.
Gameplay is very similar to ExciteTruck. The idea is to drive like a maniac, come in first place, and earn as many stars as possible during the race. You get stars by pulling off crazy moves, like doing long drifts, and getting super-air off jumps. The best moves earn five stars. Rack up those stars, because you're going to need them; some of the later races challenge you to earn hundreds of stars in order to secure the coveted "S" rating (which is the best rating you can get for a race).
Some of the mid-race mini games are silly and annoying. For example, you'll sometimes have to swing on a wire high above the ground, performing a certain number of revolutions before you'll be able to continue the race. To do the revolutions, you'll have to "row" the Wii remote in a circular motion. And no, you will not look cool while doing this, so don’t even try.
The game is also compatible with the Wii Wheel, but personally, I felt like I had more control over my frog-bot with the Wii remote. (Hold it sideways, and use the 2 button for gas.)
Overall, ExciteBots: Trick Racing is a lot of fun. Don't overlook this one. Sports Gamer Says: Recommended.
