Joe has a lock on the competition. This season he grappled his way to a 15–1 record and won the TX USA novice state wrestling championship (60-pound weight class, 10- to 11-year-old age group). In 2010, he was the TX USA rookie state champion at 56 pounds. The sixth-grader, who has been wrestling for two years, doesn’t usually get nervous before a big match. “I remember to stay positive and believe that I will win,” he says. “That helps me get pumped up.”
Makena scored 40 goals in 10 games to lead her recreational soccer club, the Strikers, to a 10–0 record in the under-eight girls’ division last year. Her team outscored its opponents 76–7, including a game in which Makena netted eight goals in the span of 20 minutes.
Connor thrives in the fast lane. Racing since he was five years old, he is a 2010 Arizona Pro Auto Sports Legends Champion. Connor won the 2010–11 CCS Winter Series Championship (Bandolero Outlaws division) and also placed first in a race at the Orange County Speedway in North Carolina this year.
Lauren finished the 2010 season ranked Number 1 in the nation among 11-year-old YMCA swimmers for the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races. Last November, she broke a national YMCA record in the 100-yard freestyle for 11- to 12-year-old girls with a time of 52.57 seconds.
