Nike Swingman Jackie Robinson cleats

To celebrate baseball great Jackie Robinson, every single major league player, coach, and manager wore his number 42 on their jersey yesterday. But a few players also honored Robinson, who broke baseball's color barrier, by wearing another piece of equipment: cleats. Nike designed a special edition of its Swingman cleats that featured an engraving of Robinson sliding into home plate and the number 42 on the heel. The shoes were worn by some of the game's biggest stars, including Ken Griffey Jr. of the Seattle Mariners, Jimmy Rollins of the Philadelphia Phillies, and David Wright of the New York Mets. It's fitting that Nike chose a shoe from Griffey's signature Swingman line because it was Junior's idea for major league baseball to unretire Robinson's number 42 for a day so that all players could wear it. "I knew the [Robinson] family, and it was my way of saying thank you," Griffey said Wednesday, donning the No. 42 Mariners uniform. "That was pretty much my way of giving back. I had no idea it would turn into something like this."

The cleats that the players wore yesterday were made just for the major leaguers. But a non-cleated, turf version of the shoe will be available at select stores starting on May 1.
