As President Calvin Coolidge and his wife looked on, the Senators' Earl McNeely hit a ground ball that popped up and over Giants' third baseman Freddie Lindstrom's head for a single that allowed Muddy Ruel to head home for the win.

Sammy Baugh's Redskins defeated the rival Chicago Bears 14-6 in one of the game's biggest upsets. Just two years earlier, the Bears had destroyed the Redskins 73-0 in the title game.

The Redskins, led by John Riggins and the team's offensive line (affectionately nicknamed "The Hogs"), earned a trip to Super Bowl XVII by beating the rival Dallas Cowboys 31-17.

After 33 years without a baseball team to call its own, Washington D.C. welcomed the former Montreal Expos to RFK Stadium. Renamed the Washington Nationals, the team took the field for its home opener before a sellout crowd of 45,596. President George W. Bush threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Nationals christened their new home with a 5-3 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

After a Game 7 win in Seattle, Washington celebrated its only NBA Championship in franchise history. Led by Hall of Famers Elvin Hayes and Wes Unseld, the Bullets paraded in downtown with late owner Abe Pollin at the center of the victory cruise. The winning moment happened across the country, but the hometown fans gathered in the streets to congratulate the squad.

On the 50th anniversary of the game, the East turned what looked to be a blowout into a 111-110, come-from-behind victory. Down 95-74 with nine minutes left, the East came thundering back with the help of Allen Iverson, Jerry Stackhouse and Vince Carter. For the last minutes of the game a back and forth battle ensued, coming to a surprising end when Marbury answered Kobe Bryant's jumper with a 3-pointer that put the East up by a point with 28 seconds remaining.

The Redskins headed toward their first Super Bowl by defeating the rival Dallas Cowboys 26-3. Billy Kilmer threw two touchdown passes to Charley Taylor to lead the way.

Capping a 51-point performance, Gilbert Arenas hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds to deliver a 114-111 win over the Jazz in January 2006. The shot was Arenas' second buzzer-beater, the first coming only days earlier against the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Redskins built a 21-point lead after three quarters thanks in part to a pair of touchdowns from John Riggins. In the fourth quarter, though, Joe Montana and the Niners went nuts, to the tune of 21 straight points. But the Skins reeled off a 13-play, six-minute drive late in the game that set up a game-winning 40-yard field goal from Mark Moseley with 40 seconds left.

There's always a Cinderella in the NCAA Tournament, and in 2006 it was George Mason. But even after beating basketball powerhouses Michigan State and North Carolina en route to the Elite Eight, no one expected the Patriots to make the Final Four.
